A maintenance order that never ended

The proposed PvE encounter takes squads below a cooling station to meet the Custodian: a maintenance machine that still enforces an evacuation order nobody can cancel. It reads every living body as an obstruction to be removed from the archive chamber. Its danger comes from a comprehensible purpose, not random aggression. Wall markings, a repeated announcement and the placement of discarded repair tools explain what the facility once did before the first attack begins.

Read, interrupt, relocate

The first phase teaches a visible sequence: a rail light changes, a manipulator locks onto a lane, then the sweep follows. Squads can leave the lane or interrupt the exposed control relay, but doing both wastes precious attention. The second phase combines a familiar sweep with moving repair units, asking the team to divide responsibilities. A final archive transfer keeps one operator occupied while the others create safe space. Escalation comes from recombining known rules, not hiding a new rule behind unavoidable damage.

Support means creating time

A support player is not a repair station following the loudest teammate. They decide whether recovering someone will preserve the operation or create a second casualty. A suppression role buys a clean crossing; an engineer can make an interaction safe; a scout can name the next threatened lane before anyone steps into it. These functions should remain valuable even when damage totals are low. The mission’s success condition is bringing the archive out, not awarding every operator the same job.

Failure should teach a readable lesson

A wipe is useful feedback only if players can reconstruct what happened. Did the squad split across a closing divider, ignore a repair unit or begin the transfer without an escape lane? The environment should answer through consistent signals. Colour cannot carry the whole message: timing, shape and sound need to reinforce it. The intended retry preserves the knowledge gained from the attempt. No live difficulty, accessibility certification or encounter performance is claimed; those need a working game to evaluate.

Extraction is part of the encounter

Disabling the Custodian opens the chamber but does not erase the facility’s hazards. The mission closes with a deliberate withdrawal along a route that looks different after the cooling system changes state. A team that spent every resource on the final damage window must solve that consequence together. Keep the archive carrier inside the formation, check flooded service passages before entering and save one clear route for a late rescue. The final walk makes the whole facility part of the encounter.
